A Californian recap has to survive the “which beach?” question.
This recap stays in California on purpose: one state, four climates, mostly asphalt. Fog, granite, Highway 1, and a desert night on one globe.
The job is the cousin who flew into LAX and thinks the rest of the state is a parking lot. The map has to say Yosemite, then Big Sur, then Joshua Tree, without a pin that thinks Big Sur is in Oregon.

The route
Highway 1 is the plot. The desert is the twist.
This is how a lot of Californians actually show the state: a loop that is not only the coast. You can start in the Bay, cut inland for granite, drop back onto the Pacific, roll through Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, then finish in the Mojave light before San Diego.
Yosemite National Park
Drive inland. Use the park name so the pin sits in the Valley, not in Merced.
Big Sur / Highway 1
The PCH spine. “Big Sur” plus drive is enough. Monterey is a valid extra stop.
Santa Barbara
Southbound coast. Still a drive. Still California.
Los Angeles
The airport city — not the whole recap. Keep it one stop on a longer state story.
Joshua Tree
The twist. Desert after the coast is why this page is not a PCH-only postcard.
San Diego
Finish. Drive. If you flew home from SAN, say so in the prompt.
